The TGFPSP is first and foremost somebody's little girl. At one time she looked cute as a button, dressed in pink with ponytails. She played with dolls, helped mom bake cookies, and has probably earned a few bucks baby-sitting. She has been, and always will be daddy's or mommy's little girl.

Why do children want to play organized sports? What are their goals, hopes and aspirations? Each child has his or her own specific answers to these questions. Understanding their reasons for wanting to play sports is a critical first step towards helping children to have the best possible experiences in sport. Articles in magazines and newspapers as well as some coaching textbooks often suggest that socialization is a major value of participating in youth sports. Certainly, learning to work together in a group and striving to achieve group goals are potentially important outcomes.

Don’t be intimidated! Throwing an underhand fast pitch looks a lot harder to teach than it is. Like teaching and coaching any other sport or position, be confident. Kids will pick up on your fear or lack of confidence. Learn as much as you need in order to teach the level you are working with and then grow with the players. You do not need to be an expert, able to work with a top college player, to teach an 8 year old to pitch. Learn the basics to get them on the correct path, then make a commitment to keep learning as you go. For those parents who are coaching their own child, be aware there may be a time when it is best to turn her over to someone else.
